Hallway runners and long rugs

A runner protects the floor in the busiest part of the house and makes a hallway feel finished. Most of our runners are 80 cm wide in 300, 400 and 500 cm lengths, and many match a rectangle or round from the same range so the hallway flows into the living room. Kitchen runners, bedside runners and stair runners are here too.

Choosing a runner

  • Hallways – leave 10–15 cm of floor each side and 20–30 cm at each end; an 80 x 300 cm runner suits most Sydney hallways, 80 x 400 cm for longer halls.
  • Kitchens – a washable or flatweave runner in front of the bench; 80 x 300 cm covers a galley kitchen.
  • Bedsides – an 80 x 300 cm runner each side of a king bed instead of one large rug.
  • Stairs – ask us about runner carpet fitted with stair rods, from our carpet range.

Pile and backing for busy hallways

Flatweaves and low-pile wool or polypropylene runners handle foot traffic and prams best; shaggy runners suit bedsides. A non-slip rug pad or rubber backing is essential on timber, hybrid and tiled hallways.

How to measure for a rug

Measure the floor area you want the rug to cover, then check the furniture: in a living room the rug should sit under at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs; in a dining room it should extend 60–70 cm beyond the table on every side so chairs stay on it when pulled out; in a bedroom it should run under the bed and out 60–90 cm on each side and at the foot. Leave 30–45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Our rug size guide has diagrams for every room.

Rug sizes are listed length by width in centimetres (some ranges list width first). Hand-made rugs can vary by a few centimetres from the stated size, and fringes are not included. Each product page lists every available size.

FAQs

What length runner do I need?

Measure the hallway and subtract 40–60 cm so there is floor showing at each end. 80 x 300 cm fits a 3.5 m hall; 80 x 400 cm a 4.5 m hall.

Do runners slip on timber floors?

They can. Use a non-slip rug pad cut to size; we stock them for every runner length.

Can I get a matching runner and rug?

Yes – most of our Rug Culture and Brand Ventures ranges are made in runner, rectangle and round sizes.

Are there washable runners?

Yes – thin washable runners for kitchens and entries can go in a domestic washing machine. Look for the washable tag.

Can you make a custom-length runner?

Some wool and polypropylene ranges can be cut to length and bound. Call the showroom with your measurement.
