Choosing the right material

The material you choose will shape how your beige rug feels, how it wears and how much work it takes to maintain day to day.

Getting the size right

This is where a lot of people get stuck, so it's worth thinking through before you buy. Size is easy to get wrong, especially when you're buying online and can't lay the rug out in the room first. A good rule of thumb is to always go bigger than your instinct tells you, because rugs that are too small for a space are one of the most common decorating mistakes we see, and they're easy to avoid.

For a dining room, the rug needs to extend far enough beyond the table that chairs remain on it even when pulled out — around 60cm on each side is a good rule of thumb.

For a bedroom, think about the first thing you feel when you get out of bed in the morning. You want the soft rug to be there, not the cold floorboards!

For a living room, if you're unsure between two sizes, go with the larger one. A big beige rug that fills the space looks deliberate. A too-small one will look off.
